Start a document

You can start a document from the Docs home page, from Drive, or from inside another document.

From the Docs home page

Open Docs from the app launcher. The top of the page shows Your documents with a row of starting points:

Docs home: Blank, Proposal, Meeting notes, Project brief and Letter templates above Recent documents
  • Blank: an empty page.
  • Proposal, Meeting notes, Project brief and Letter: templates with headings and placeholder text you replace.

Click one and the new document opens right away. Below the templates, Recent documents lists your documents, latest first. The search box at the top (Search in Docs) narrows that list by name.

From Drive

In Drive, open the folder the document belongs in, click New and choose SiteSmith Docs. The document is saved in that folder. Documents made from the Docs home page go to the top of My Drive; you can move them later with File, Move to….

Name it

A new document is called Untitled document. Click the name at the top left, type a new one and press Enter. The name is what you'll see in Drive and in search.

Know when it's saved

Next to the name, a small status tells you where your changes are:

  • Saving soon… and Saving… while you type
  • Saved to Drive once everything is stored
  • Offline - will save when back if your connection drops

Other ways to start

Inside any document, the File menu has New document (opens in a new tab), New from a template, Open another document and Make a copy. Making a copy is a quick way to reuse last month's notes as this month's starting point.
